We're working hard to provide resources and opportunities to ensure IB students don't fall behind on account of COVID-19 disruption.
Understanding the impact of COVID-19 on IB students
While schools and educators are working ceaselessly to adapt to the challenges of delivering the IB programmes to students during the COVID-19 pandemic, at EIB we are concerned that students may be disadvantaged by recent disruptions in a number of keys ways and we have aligned our offerings to helps students and families work around the impacts of coronavirus on their learning.
Individual Student Need
School closures and distance-learning limit students' contact with educators who can work closely with them to deliver lesson content using methods which suit the needs of each individual student, particularly students with SEN.
We recommend:
One-on-one support gives students and their tutors time to explore, engage, and learn at the student's pace, to make sure they stay on top of subject material or lose ground during the COVID-19 disruptions.
With the IBO's decision to award final grades to the 2020 cohort on the basis of past attainment, students who have been relying on high grades in their final examinations to bring up their average result in a subject may struggle to see that improvement reflected in their final subject grade. As such, some students may be in a situation where they may want to retake some aspects of their Diploma in the November 2020 session.
We recommend:
The Retakes Revision Course provides intensive, exam-focused revision over three or five full days, delivered specifically to address student's gaps of knowledge.
Working closely with students, tutors can work with students to assess their subject knowledge, identify areas for improvement and help students prepare for retakes.
School closures and the pivot to distance-learning has caused significant disruption to end-of-year teaching in all IB schools. Many students have had less time and exposure to the material they should be covering at this time of year, meaning many will lack an understanding of material they should have covered before their final year. For these students we recommend.
We recommend:
Specifically crafted in response to COVID-19, the Winter Mocks Revision Course allows students to attend small online classes in specific units, to make sure they've covered the material which has been affected by COVID disruptions.
The IBO has already announced significant changes to the assessment methods for the May 2021 Examination period. As assessment methods change, educators are less able to rely on prior exams to help students structure their learning and revision, and students will require an even stronger understanding of subject material to be able to handle diverse and novel assessment methods.
We recommend:
Our 'May 2021 Examinations Report' goes into detail into all the changes the IBO have announced for every IB subject, as well as how to to respond and work with educators to minimise disruption as much as possible.
With the support of a tutor, students can ensure their learning is specifically focused on the areas which require attention to round out and complete their subject knowledge.
